Why I Trust the Bible and Why You Can Too
Let me start with something so ordinary you probably never think about it.
Every morning you wake up and swing your legs off the bed, trusting they will hold you. You sit in a chair without inspecting it first. You breathe without verifying that oxygen will still be there. You sleep while the earth keeps spinning and never once lose a night worrying about it.
Your entire life runs on trust. Every single day.
So the real question is never whether you will trust something. The question is always what you choose to place that trust in. Rejecting God does not eliminate faith. It redirects faith toward something else, usually the belief that He does not exist or that this life carries no eternal weight. And I have sat across from enough people who built their lives on that foundation to tell you exactly where it leads. Despair. Every time.
Scripture forms the foundation of everything I do as a counselor. Not as a nice supplement to real therapy. As the actual bedrock. So let me tell you why.
The Bible Is Trustworthy, and the Evidence Backs It Up
John 17:17 tells us that God’s Word is truth. Not contains truth. Is truth. That distinction matters.
About 25 percent of the Bible carries prophetic content, and the fulfillments of those prophecies arrive with a precision that no human author could engineer across centuries and multiple writers. That kind of accuracy does not happen by accident.
People ask me all the time whether we can still trust a document that passed through human hands across thousands of years of copying. The answer comes from the manuscript evidence itself. Historians have identified over 24,000 New Testament manuscripts, with some dating within 25 to 50 years of the original documents. No other ancient text comes anywhere close to that number. Scholar F.F. Bruce made the point clearly. If the New Testament were a secular document, historians would consider its authenticity beyond a reasonable doubt. We hold the Bible to a standard we apply to no other ancient writing, and it still passes.
The Bible Is Relevant to Everything You Are Actually Dealing With
Some people treat Scripture like a historical artifact. Something important that happened a long time ago but does not quite connect to anxiety, grief, broken relationships, or the identity questions keeping people up at night.
Hebrews 4:12 to 13 pushes back hard on that idea. God’s Word penetrates to the division of soul and spirit and judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. That does not describe an ancient document. That is describing something alive and actively working in the present moment.
In nearly 30 years of counseling, I have never once run into a human struggle that Scripture failed to address. Not one. The questions change. The packaging looks different from century to century. But the root issues of the human heart stay exactly the same, and God’s Word speaks to every one of them.
The Bible Carries Authority Because Jesus Said So
Psalm 119:105 gives us the image. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Not a suggestion. Not one option among many. A lamp. Something you need to see where you are going.
Jesus treated Scripture as the authoritative Word of God. Matthew 19 shows Him quoting it directly to settle questions. The Son of God trusted the Bible and pointed others to it constantly. If Jesus accepted its authority, that settles the question for anyone who claims to follow Him.
What Archaeology and History Confirm
Critics have spent centuries trying to find the cracks. What they keep finding instead is confirmation.
Luke faced ridicule for details scholars once dismissed as historically inaccurate. Archaeology proved him right consistently. The Hittites, once used as evidence that the Bible invented people groups, turned up in excavations. Belshazzar, mocked as a fictional character, showed up in the historical record. Non-Christian historians like Josephus and Tacitus confirmed the life and execution of Jesus without any theological motivation to do so.
The eyewitness accounts carry their own internal honesty that forgers would never produce. The Gospels record the disciples running scared, Peter denying Jesus three times, and the women arriving first at the empty tomb in a culture that dismissed women as unreliable witnesses. Nobody fabricating a story to gain followers writes it that way.
The Resurrection Changes Everything
All of the evidence builds toward one moment that either validates everything or collapses it entirely.
Paul wrote it plainly in 1 Corinthians 15:17. If Christ did not rise, faith means nothing. But He did rise. The empty tomb, the radical transformation of terrified disciples into people who died for what they witnessed firsthand, and the explosive spread of Christianity through a hostile world all point to a historical event that no natural explanation adequately addresses.
The resurrection does not just confirm that Jesus lived. It confirms that everything He said about Scripture, about God, about sin and salvation and eternal life, carried the weight of truth behind it.
Why This Matters When I Sit Across From Someone in Pain
My trust in Scripture does not stay theoretical. It shows up in every session.
When someone carries despair, and the world offers them coping techniques, I can offer them something with actual power behind it. When someone doubts their worth, I do not direct them to self-help principles. I direct them to what God says about who they are. When someone cannot find a reason to keep going, the Bible does not give them a philosophy. It gives them a living God who promises to walk through every valley with them.
I teach Scripture faithfully so clients can see its truth for themselves. I live by God’s Word, so they can watch what it actually produces in a real person. Every piece of guidance I offer rests on His promises rather than whatever the current cultural conversation happens to be saying this year.
When someone walks in carrying doubt, despair, or a complete loss of direction, I can point them to a foundation that does not shift. That is not arrogance. That is the most practical gift I can offer anyone who sits across from me.

The Bible stands trustworthy, relevant, authoritative, historically reliable, and centered entirely on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Fulfilled prophecy, manuscript evidence, archaeological confirmation, and the testimony of eyewitnesses who paid for that testimony with their lives all point in the same direction.
